In the fiat currency world, most financial institutions see these ICO transactions as “unregulated” investments of cryptocurrencies where users can make Bitcoin or other digital currencies. The key word here is unregulated. Unlike share or traditional IPOs, ICO coins, the representation of your investment into a certain digital currency startup, aren’t linked to any ownership rights and thus can be trade or exchanged at will. In the fiat world, this is a huge no-no.

Conversely, if one were to take the super-long view and, say, bought a few shares in 2012 at a sub-$100 price point, even with Bitcoin dropping half its peak value, that investor would still theoretically make over a 600 percent return on his investment just by waiting. Granted, the sub $100 days are likely now over, what with the currency's new-found stardom so we'll have to wait and see how the market plays out.
Coincheck is one of Japan’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges and offers leveraged trading in some digital coins for JPY (Japanese YEN) and vice versa, plus a spot buy/sell service, among others. The crypto exchange offers one type of account with a 1:5 leverage. But, users need to undergo a particularly strict verification process to use that account. Can you trust Coincheck despite the breach in security? See here for more detail.
An official investigation into bitcoin traders was reported in May 2018.[176] The U.S. Justice Department launched an investigation into possible price manipulation, including the techniques of spoofing and wash trades.[177][178][179] Traders in the U.S., the U.K, South Korea, and possibly other countries are being investigated.[176] Brett Redfearn, head of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Trading and Markets, had identified several manipulation techniques of concern in March 2018.
If you think cryptocurrencies are the future, or are even just fascinated by one or two particular ones, there are ways to trade in some of your bitcoins for them. You'll need to make sure you have the right bitcoin wallets and use the right bitcoin exchanges, depending on which cryptocurrencies you're choosing; they're not all as universal across exchanges as bitcoin.
Then, in early 2009, an anonymous programmer or a group of programmers under an alias Satoshi Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin. Satoshi described it as a ‘peer-to-peer electronic cash system.’ It is completely decentralized, meaning there are no servers involved and no central controlling authority. The concept closely resembles peer-to-peer networks for file sharing.
The debate over whether bitcoin should be considered a legal tender has accelerated in the wake of the high-profile attack of Japanese exchange Mt. Gox and the widespread adoption of it in payment processing at major U.S. retailers. Unlike the U.S. dollar, the Chinese yuan, or the euro, bitcoin is not recognized universally as a currency by every participant of the global markets, including regulators and government officials.
Though each bitcoin transaction is recorded in a public log, names of buyers and sellers are never revealed – only their wallet IDs. While that keeps bitcoin users’ transactions private, it also lets them buy or sell anything without easily tracing it back to them. That’s why it has become the currency of choice for people online buying drugs or other illicit activities.
The silence of the Chinese authorities was seen as a subtle acceptance signal by market participants. The situation didn’t last long however. On December 7th, The People’s Bank of China barred financial institutions from buying or selling virtual currency or Bitcoin related products. The Bank also demanded that businesses stop with the practice of pricing their products in Bitcoins. BTC/USD opened the day at $906.50 on BTC-E. After the news hit the wires, bitcoin prices crashed from to a low of $551 in only 9 hours, a fall of 39%.

Nakamoto is estimated to have mined one million bitcoins[27] before disappearing in 2010, when he handed the network alert key and control of the code repository over to Gavin Andresen. Andresen later became lead developer at the Bitcoin Foundation.[28][29] Andresen then sought to decentralize control. This left opportunity for controversy to develop over the future development path of bitcoin.[30][29]
